Mardi Gras Class

Mardi Gras Tassel Doll By Marla L. Niederer
I always love it when doll artists that take my classes share with me their finished doll.  This past summer I taught a class on how to make a tassel doll in Clayton NY at the Thousand Islands Arts Center.  This is what the Mardi Gras Class doll looked like.

Cande Houghton took the class with no experience of ever making a doll before.  She shared with me a picture of her completed doll.  She did an absolutely wonderful job!

If you are interested in this class I will be teaching Mardi Gras at the Thousand Islands Arts Center next summer again in addition to another class called Little Lamb Lissette.

Both classes will be one day classes.  Clayton, NY is a lovely place to vacation in the summer and I would love to have you join me in class.

Until next time……

Just wanted to share

Goddess by Marla L. Niederer
I always love to see the creativity that doll makers exhibit when taking one of my classes.  Julia Gausvik took my class the Goddess at Artistic Figures in Cloth and Clay this past spring.

Mermaids on my Workbench

Sleeping Mermaid by Marla L. Niederer
“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” – Jacques Yves Cousteau
Reclining Mermaid by Marla L. Niederer
I have always loved to be around water, be it a lake, river, or ocean.  I always feel calmer, more peaceful, and uplifted when I am near it.

I have also always held a fascination with mermaids.  Maybe it’s the femininity they represent, maybe it’s the beauty they are always portrayed with.

So when asked to create a commissioned small sized mermaid, of course my response was YES!   I was so happy to create this little mermaid that I couldn’t just make one!

They are far from complete.  They need hair, headdresses, and all sorts of embellishment.  But, I thought it was time to share what has been on my workbench lately.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.
Until next time……

A Watercolor Weekend in Kingston

My Beloved and I just recently spent a weekend in Historic Kingston Ontario.  It is such a delightful city to visit.  We enjoyed an absolutely amazing gluten free meal at Olivea.
My Beloved and I
Since joining a watercolor group last fall I have really been enjoying taking my watercolors with me wherever I go.  While there I was able to do a little bit of watercolor painting at the waterfront.

I also spent a little time painting in front of the Prince George Hotel.

When we returned home we made our own sushi at home.

Trying to get back into a routine

I had a pretty busy time getting ready for and attending the Artistic Figures in Cloth and Clay Conference in Ohio and then very shortly afterwards attending the Quinlan Art Doll and Teddy Bear Conference in Philadelphia.  After arriving home I needed some time to decompress so what better thing to do than to chase all that is shiny down the rabbit hole again!   Nicola Battilana has a tutorial on her Pixie Hill Etsy shop on how to make fairy garden teacups.  You can find her tutorials in her shop here

Of course I had to make some fairy garden teacups before starting to work on my art dolls again!  I made them to give as gifts but of course had to keep one for myself.

I also thought you might enjoy some pictures of dolls made by one of my students Vicki Petticord.

She took the Goddess class I taught at AFICC and made her doll into The Girl Next Door!  I always love to see how my students put their own mark onto the dolls they create from the classes I teach.

Vicki also took my online class Mistique and made this beautiful doll from the class.

AFICC 2017 Conference

I just returned home from the Artistic Figures in Cloth and Clay Conference in Columbus Ohio where I had the honor of having taught a workshop called the Goddess.
Goddess by Marla Niederer

Cyndy Sieving coordinated the event and it was so wonderfully organized with every detail planned out.  The way everything ran so smoothly was a testament to all of the hard work Cyndy and her staff performed.

One of the best parts of attending an art doll conference is being able to visit with my doll making friends.

I lucked out to have Sherry Goshen as a roommate.  She is such a sweetheart and we quickly became good friends.

Attending an art doll conference is always inspiring because you get to see what other doll makers are up to.  Here are some photos from the exhibit gallery.

I had such a wonderful group of doll makers in my class. They are so talented and so much fun to spend time with!

There was a banquet on the last evening of the conference where some of the workshop dolls from all of the classes were exhibited.

If you don't want to wait until the next conference to take a workshop I will be teaching an online class called Flower Faeries on A for Artistic starting May 9th
